7 Stress Signals Your Dog May Offer Prior to a Bite

Teach Your Children Well, 7 Stress Signals To Watch for Prior to a Dog Bite

Dogs can and do bite.  In the US alone 850,000 people seek medical fearful dogattention for dog bites annually. When children are bitten it is usually a dog they know (theirs, neighbors, friends). While biting is usually a last resort type of communication for most dogs, it is just that, a way of communicating “I am afraid” or “I don’t like what you are doing to or around me”.  Usually a dog offers another form of communication previous to a bite. Most adults and definitely children either don’t pick up on these signals or ignore them. [Read more…]

5 Simple Steps to Helping Your Dog with Grief

Dogs and Grief, How You Can Help

Dogs, like people have different personalities, each being an individual. When a family pet loss gwinnett, pet sitterexperiences the loss of a dog and they have another dog(s), the one left behind will grieve the loss of the passing pack member.

Some dogs grieve longer than others but in general, compared to their human counterparts their grieving process is less emotional and much shorter. However if the human puts all their emotions into the dog(s) that is left it can certainly extend the grieving process and may even create some behavioral problems.

While it can be difficult for you the best approach is:

1.     If possible allow the companion dog(s) to be present at the Euthanasia. A mobile veterinarian can typically perform an in home euthanasia allowing for a peaceful passing and the presence of the other pack members.

2.     Keep your emotions in check as much as possible. Easier said than done for sure! And yes a little extra TLC goes a long way, but too much can do more harm than good.

3.     Keep a normal routine going. This helps dogs feel safe, secure and helps to relieve or keep stress to a minimum.

4.     Some added exercise is in order as this will get their feel good chemicals (endorphins)dog walking brownee with pet sitter in duluth, ga flowing, helping them to be in a peaceful, happy state. The same will work for you as well so get out and   walk!

5.     This is a great time to introduce some training as a means of stimulating your dog’s brain in a positive way. Perhaps some agility, nose work or some good old fashioned basic obedience is in order. Dogs thrive on learning new things.

Remember, time heals and you and your canine companion will feel happy again one day, maybe even enough to open your heart and your home to another dog in need of a family.

5 Important Tips to Avoid Mosquito Dangers Now

AVOID NEW MOSQUITO DANGERS NOW TO STAY SAFER LONG TERM

By Jeannie Moreira, Mosquito Squad of Duluth-Lawrenceville

Although right now it seems to be far from the Duluth, Lawrenceville, Johns Creek, Suwanee, and other metro Atlanta areas of Georgia, we all need to be aware of what The Rhode Island Department of Health told the public late last year regarding mosquitos and Chikungunya.

They confirmed two cases of Chikungunya (pronounced Chicken-Guy-Yuh), a viral infection,Chikungunya involving travelers who returned from the Dominican Republic last month, the first cases of the disease being found in the northeast.

According to officials, the virus is primarily spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is typically found in Caribbean countries, as well as Africa, Asia and islands in the Indian and western Pacific oceans, but there have been about 41 cases reported in the U.S. this year.

Previous cases of Chikungunya were reported in Florida (272 imported cases were reported from January 1 to October 14, 2014), North Carolina and Tennessee. The spread of the disease prompted travel advisories for those Americans traveling to the Caribbean.

The two Rhode Island residents infected with Chikungunya returned from the Dominican Republic twelve days apart. Multiple other possible cases remain under investigation.

mosquito chikungunya rashThere is no vaccine for the disease, and the treatment involves eliminating the symptoms, which include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling and/or a rash.

Officials have also urged Rhode Island residents to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds, as mosquitoes can allow for person-to-person transmission of the disease

mosquito squad

One of the most effective ways to eliminate mosquitoes for good is with ongoing seasonal protection from a trusted mosquito control company, like Mosquito Squad.

As the continued innovator in both mosquito and tick control, Mosquito Squad shares these best ways to keep mosquitoes at bay, known as the 5 T’s™:

Tip – tip any vessel that holds unintended standing water outside your home – pet water bowls, planter trays and children’s toys.

Toss – toss any items in your yard that could collect water that can be discarded: old toys, unused birdbaths, and tires. An item as small as a flipped over soda pop cap can become a breeding ground for thousands of mosquito larvae.

Turn Over – turn over any potentially water-holding items or containers so that liquid can’t collect in them, until the time they may once again be needed. Again, think bowls, planters, and birdbaths.

Tarps Eliminated – tarps create ideal mosquito breeding grounds. If at all possible, eliminate all outside tarps.  Not only do they hold small pools of water which are ideal for egg-laying, but the shade they create is a preferred spot for adults to harbor during the heat of the day, waiting to come out and bite when they detect warm bodies nearby.

Treat Accordingly – this is where the experts at Mosquito Squad come in. Our trained applicators will take care of Tip, Toss, Turn Over, and eliminate Tarps for you, and we also use the safest, most effective Treatments available to protect your family and pets from biting insects and the diseases they carry.

2 Fun Tips for Stimulating Your Dog’s Brain at Mealtime

I love to think of ways to challenge my dog in fun ways. Whether by teaching her a new trick or both of us learning something new together like agility. One of the ways I challenge my dog Cole’s brain on a daily basis is at mealtimes. Using these two simple but fun ideas.

1. Treat Balls/Toys: We own 5-6 different feeding balls/toys otherwise known as “treat balls”.  dog food ball 2You can find quite an assortment at your local pet store (the one shown is just one of many designs). These food dispensing toys are great for challenging your dog’s mind and body because they have to figure out how to get the food out and it usually involves them moving the toy around so that the food falls out. I take it one step further by putting Cole in a sit stay pet tricks trainer lilburn, gain the kitchen (good daily practice of sit/stay) while I go hide the toy somewhere in the house. I then come back and tell her “find it!”. She loves this routine and she goes racing around the house looking (with her nose) for her meal.  I use a different toy each day to keep it interesting and fun.

2. Slo-Bowls: I just recently found out about these really cool food bowls (meant for slowing slo-bowls down dog’s that eat really fast). They come in different cool designs and they are sure to be a fun challenge for any dog to eat their food from. They are called Slo-Bowls check them out www.slo-bowls.com .  They come in four different designs and in small and large sizes.  I ordered one of each design so that again I can keep it interesting. Well she slo-bowl absolutely loves them!

I challenge you to make your dog’s mealtime more interesting by starting with just one interactive feeding dispenser toy/bowl. The first time you try it put a bit of lunch meat in it with their food (or something highly scented like chicken, hot dog bits) to help motivate them to really work to learn how to get the food out. It will just help to encourage them if it is a bit challenging at first.  And if you would like to know how to teach your dog the “find it!” game, give me a call I’d be happy to share my tips and techniques with you! Happy feeding!

Ticks and Your Pet

What Are Ticks? Ticks are external parasites that feed on the blood of host animals such asticks your dog. They usually require three feedings to complete their life cycles.

How Are Ticks Transmitted to Dogs?

Ticks are most active from spring through fall and live in tall brush or grass, where they may attach to dogs playing on their turf. These parasites prefer to stay close to the head, neck, feet and ear area. In severe infestations, however, they can be found anywhere on a dog’s body.

How Do I Know if My Dog Has Ticks?

Ticks are visible to the naked eye. If you spot one, it is important to take care when removing tick on dogit. Any contact with the tick’s blood can potentially transmit infection to your dog or even to you! Treat the area with rubbing alcohol and pluck the parasite with tweezers, making sure you’ve gotten the biting head and other body parts. Since it may only take a few hours for disease to be transmitted from an attached tick, it is ideal for your dog to be evaluated by a veterinarian soon after any  are found  on your pet.

What Are Some Complications Associated with Ticks in Dogs?

  • Blood loss
  • Anemia
  • Tick paralysis
  • Skin irritation or infection

These parasites can also transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, all of which can cause serious complications and are potentially fatal without prompt and proper treatment.

How Can I Prevent Tick Infestation?

Many of the same products on the market that treat fleas also kill ticks and protect against future infestation. Speak to your vet to select the best product for your dog.
The key to any successful tick control program lies in your own backyard. Ensure a tick-free lawn by mowing it regularly, removing tall weeds and making it inhospitable to rodents by keeping garbage covered and inaccessible.

New Year, New Pet

New Year, New Pet

Terie Hansen

At this time of year I receive an influx of calls for dog training as many people have brought a pet sitting client at Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Carenew dog into their home. Some call right away while others wait till they have experienced negative behaviors or issues with their new dog.

This begs the question… When is the best time to reach out to a dog trainer? The answer is simple… before you bring the dog home! In fact before you even choose a dog is best.

A good dog trainer can help you decide which breed or more importantly, what temperament and energy level would best fit you, your family and your lifestyle. A good dog trainer can give you tips to help make the transition of the new arrival go smoothly and help you to establish leadership skills immediately especially if there are already other pets in your home. They can advise you on how to introduce your new dog to the dog(s) you already have. This is vital to minimize possible battles for pack ranking.

pet sitter in suwanee, gaA good dog trainer will teach you that introducing your new dog slowly to their surroundings and limiting their access to one or two rooms initially (instead of whoo hoo! Free rein) then gradually expanding the rooms they have access to will help the new arrival feel safe and comforted.

Bringing a new dog home is an exciting time for you and your family, however keeping it calm and low key for the first week or two is advised. Think of how you might feel in a totally new and strange environment… Would you want it to be crazy with new people you didn’t know clamoring around you, touching you and talking to you in a foreign language? Or would you prefer that the transition was calm, quiet and relaxed giving you time to adjust and take it all in? Think about it. What’s the best for your new dog?

Where Do Mosquitos Go In Winter?

Peak-a-boo? Where are you?

Where do mosquitoes go during the winter months?

Mosquitoes are cold-blooded creatures and do not generally bite in temperatures below 50F. mosquito squad of Duluth, gaIn Georgia, some adult mosquitoes become inactive with the onset of cold weather and enter into hibernation before the first frost. Other mosquitoes die in the fall but have winter-hardy eggs, which hibernate as embryos.

Some species of mosquitoes die off when the weather turns cold, leaving only eggs, which lie on the ground like seeds, waiting for warmth and spring rains to hatch and produce a new generation. Except in the warmest part of their range, these adult mosquitoes actually do only live in the summer and disappear in winter.

Other species survive cold weather by hibernating. Mosquitoes that belong to the genera Anopheles, Culex and Culiseta hibernate, and so do some other less common types in the United States.

It’s hard to believe that these fragile-looking creatures can survive freezing temperatures.

J. Turner Brakeley, who owned a cranberry plantation up north in New Jersey, became fascinated around the turn of the 20th century with studying mosquitoes in the cold. Brakeley discovered a new species with a unique cold-weather survival strategy, the pitcher-plant mosquito (Wyeomyia Smithii) but he also found and described hundreds of ordinary hibernating adult mosquitoes, alive and well in the midst of a New Jersey winter.

Brakeley found mosquitoes, hiding outdoors in the sheltered areas of banks that overhung creeks, amid exposed tree roots, and in holes in the ground left by moles, mice and other animals, as well as in hollow trees.

Around human habitation, they hid in cellars of both barns and houses, where the underground temperature stayed warmer than the outside area. He also noticed them in vacant houses or buildings, or among boxes and other stored junk.

If they could find a partially heated space, such as a cellar in a heated home, they would fly mosquito squad of Duluth, gaaway if he disturbed them. If they needed to survive where the temperature was truly cold, they went into full hibernation and he could pick them up or knock them loose so they fell to the ground.

To survive the cold, the mosquitoes took a position Brakeley called the “hibernation squat,” bending their legs and tucking their body close to the surface they sat on. They may have been trying to absorb some heat from the surface, since they’re cold blooded and can’t make their own body heat. He found thousands of mosquitoes hibernating in homes and outbuildings around the cranberry bogs, some in the cellars, others squatting on the walls or ceilings of empty buildings.

Since they don’t eat during the winter, they add weight in the fall by switching from blood to food with more sugar, such as rotting fruit or nectar, and can double their weight. Scientists have recently discovered what signals them to change their diet.

Some mosquitoes can stand the cold better than others and don’t need to hibernate where winters are mild, or will come out of hibernation when the weather warms even a little in winter, or will hatch in the spring while snow is still on the ground. They’re all usually nicknamed “snow mosquitoes,” though they belong to several different species

Anal Glands: To Express or Not to Express

Anal Glands: To Express or Not to Express

Anal glands are located inside the anus of most carnivores, as well as a few other mammals. These glands secrete a foul smelling fluid-like material. Normally, as an animal defecates, the glands empty some of this material for the purpose of scent marking. When an animal is stressed or scared, he may express his anal glands resulting in a noticeable foul odor.

Some animals may have a difficult time expressing their anal glands on their own. The quality dog scooting anal glandsof your pet’s food may contribute to problems with the anal glands. The glands are expressed physically as stool passes. If the stool is not firm enough, the glands will not properly express. What a pet eats may affect the material that builds up in the glands. If the material is too thick it will be difficult to express and may block the duct that drains the material leading to impaction.

Dogs are more likely to suffer from complications with their anal glands than cats, and small breeds are more likely to have problems than other dogs. Alternatively, pets with medical issues causing chronic soft stools or diarrhea may also have trouble expressing their anal glands. Some dogs may benefit from the addition of 100% canned pumpkin (which is a good source of fiber) to their diet. The fiber helps to firm up and add bulk to the stool, which in turn will help to express the glands.

Signs that your pet may need their anal glands expressed:

  • A common sign is scooting, or dragging the rear end on the ground. This is most often an attempt to relieve the discomfort of full anal glands.
  • Many pets will excessively chew or lick at their hind end which can cause the glands to express a small amount of material and a foul odor may be noticed.
  • Some pets will circle and chew at their tail
  • Others may sit abruptly at times, which may be followed by scooting, licking, or chewing.

If the anal glands are not expressed they will become impacted. This leads to infection within the glands. The gland will then become painful. At this stage, it will require veterinary treatment to heal properly, and in many cases requires a pet to be sedated to have the glands flushed. If the infection is overlooked, the infected glands will abscess.

This is why it is extremely important to have your pet’s anal glands expressed when he or she starts to show signs that they are full. Please make sure your vet and/or groomer are checking your pet’s anal glands regularly!
